Slimming using diet pills can be a dangerous gamble in the battle against weight gain

Have you ever been tempted by a quick-fix solution to weight-loss? Many women have and some have faced horrific consequences.

Experts are warning that thousands of women are putting their lives at risk by buying diet pills over the internet.

Many diet pills - like Phentermine- are no longer prescribed in Britain but are easily available online - even for customers who have health problems.

Type 'diet pills' into any search engine and you will find the drugs easily available to buy without any medical checks. Many of the pills don't have any instructions on how often to take them.

Dangers

  • They can cause serious side effects including irregular heart beat, tremors and hallucinations.
  • Diet pills like Phentermine can cause serious side effects including mood swings, chest pains, hallucinations, headaches, seizures, insomnia, blurred vision and vomiting.
  • It can also cause heart attacks and in extreme circumstances, death. The drugs work by stimulating the nervous system, mimicking the natural effect of adrenalin, increasing the heart rate and suppressing the appetite.

The Department of Health said the diet pills are the responsibility of the 'Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA)' but they say the majority of these drugs are imported from foreign sources which makes it an issue for the Home Office and Customs.
