Power Electric savings

Find out how much an energy saving light bulb could save you, plus top tips for slashing your energy bills

We use 800 million pounds worth of electricity through washing machines, tumble dryers and dishwashers. But you can reduce your electricity consumption easily.

Do most of your washing at 40 or 30 degrees rather than 60 and use a third less! Just remember to do one really hot wash every few weeks to keep your machine running smoothly

Top tips

  • Tumble dryers are also costly and if you use yours everyday for a year - that alone costs you £50!

  • Clogged tumble drier filters use more energy and clothes take longer to dry. Clean yours after each load and save an easy £20 every year. Or better still, try to use a washing line on dry days.

When buying a new appliance look for the ones which are best for your bills – rated A to G on energy efficient labels – A being best.

By doing this, the average family could save a further £55 annually and enough electricity equivalent to the annual output of three power stations.

Lighting

Lighting is eating up 10-15% of your electricity bill. But you can reduce bills with energy saving light bulbs - especially in places lights are left on a lot.

If every family switched ordinary bulbs for 3 of compact fluorescent light bulbs, enough energy would be saved in a year to supply all UK street lighting.

Remember carbon dioxide is the chief culprit in climate change, so you'd also be helping the planet. Plus save 7 quid a year on your bill per bulb.

Energy saving light bulbs needn't be an eyesore either. Gone are the days when efficient bulbs hung out of shades - now you can get environmentally friendly bulbs that look indistinguishable from their standard equivalents. Click on the links below to visit some sites that offer such light bulbs.

Other energy saving tips:

  • Turning off lights when you're not in the room could cut bills by £50 a year.

  • Hang lots of mirrors and paint walls light colours both outside and inside your home. They'll reflect light into the house and help reduce your bills even more.
