Six-year-old Eden Galvani-Skeete tragically died on holiday - now her mum has launched a safety campaign to make people aware of the dangers
Last July Eden Galvani-Skeete tragically died after she was engulfed by a fireball in a botched holiday disco stunt.
She was dancing at a Turkish apartment complex when one of the staff lit a traditional 'wall of fire' nearby. However, the meths used to ignite it exploded, sending guests up in flames.
She suffered 70% burns and died in intensive care two days later.
It was an accident that could have been prevented if proper health and safety regulations were in place.
Today, one year on from the event, and on what would have been Eden's seventh birthday, her mum Elli Galvani, is launching the Eden's Trust - a campaign for safer holidays abroad.
The campaign
Elli launches The Eden's Trust at the House of Commons.
The campaign aims to:
- Make people aware of what could happen abroad
- Make tour operators only sell holidays where resorts reach EU health and safety requirements, or that country's equivalent
- Tell people about the website and what information it offers - what steps to take if something tragic happens whilst on holiday, who to turn to and there will also be a helpline people can call if they need to
Elli says: "Life without Eden is meaningless and I guess the only thing that keeps me going at this time is the battle to get some kind of justice for Eden and to prevent this kind of thing ever happening again.
'Since Eden's death there seem to have been a spate of tragedies involving both children and adults dying whilst on holiday. We all go on holiday thinking we are going to be safe and have no idea of the dangers involved or of the lack of Health and Safety at many resorts in many countries.'
'In the long term, the idea is to be able to persuade holiday companies to agree to offer EU Health and Safety standards at all their resorts. My ultimate aim is to ban fire shows at holiday resorts and to prevent further death via whatever means through carelessness or lack of safety protocol abroad. Ours did not even have a fire extinguisher on site and this was a five star complex."
