It's National Back Care Awareness Week. Find out more, plus how yoga could be the answer

Back Care Awareness Week is an annual national health awareness campaign which aims to highlight the importance of back care.

This year, the campaign will be focused on the theme of back pain in the work place.

Back pain is a major health problem, affecting approximately 17.3 million people in the UK - over one third of the adult population.

Over the course of a year, around 3.5 million people experience back pain for the first time and for 3.1 million people their pain lasts throughout the whole year. It affects men and women equally.

Five facts

  1. The main cause of back pain is lack of movement and posture.

  2. Only 10% of back pain requires medical attention as 90% is muscle-skeletal origin.

  3. If you suffer from back pain you first need to get a diagnosis from a trained Osteopath. Then you ask your yoga teacher for a personal programme.

  4. Dru Yoga works so well for back pain because it's gentle on the body.  It relies on stretching and strengthening.

  5. Always best to do your yoga in the evening, before you go to bed.

The causes of back pain are surprisingly simple. The muscle is either too stiff or tight, or too mobile and weak - both of which result in pain.

Dru Yoga

Back pain is said to be controlled by the right exercise prescription. Dru Yoga is based on gentle flowing movements and controlled breathing to suit all ages and all fitness.

A pain free back is achieved by directing the right exercises to specific tissues. This will bring the muscles back into balance.

You do not need to spend hours of laborious exercises to ease your back pain.  If you can dedicate 15 minutes a day, you can ease your back pain. The results you achieve will be permanent.
