This means that help will go directly to the victims of the quake, in providing shelter, food and providing sanitation, water supply and health care conditions particularly in the camps which have sprung up for displaced people.

The disaster

On 8 October 2005, the earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale decimated vast areas of northern Pakistan and northern India.

The Pakistan government announced that reconstruction of devastated areas could take five years but that it is determined to complete a substantial part of this in three years.  More than 3.5 million people have been made homeless.

Who is turning up?

Additional celebrities supporting the event include Gemma Kidd, whose team of professionals will be styling hair and make-up, leading British-Asian actors Art Malik and Laila Rouass, Pakistan cricket legend Imran Khan, and 'Bend it Like Beckham' director Gurinder Chaada.

In speaking about the tragedies, TV presenter Michael Palin says, "Having seen and admired the tenacious way of life and whole-hearted hospitality of the mountain people of Pakistan, I urge you to join me in giving continued support to the earthquake relief effort".

Event Organisers Stefan Kosciuszko and Viram Jasani say, "We are delighted with the response we have received so far and the launch was a great success. With support from the Pakistan High Commission, the PBTIF, The Monsoon Trust and all the generous sponsors, we are positive we can achieve maximum awareness for this concert.

"It's easy, just buy a ticket, sit back and enjoy the fantastic array of music, meanwhile supporting the people of Pakistan."
