Kym Marsh

Last updated: 20 Jan 2004

The ex Hear'Say star talks to ET on Friday, July 4

When Kym Marsh dramatically left Hear'Say - the original 'made for TV' Popstars band - it seemed unlikely we'd seen the last of the feisty brunette with the biggest voice in the band.

As the success of the Hear'Say dwindled, Kym's spotlight flourished, not so much with the help of her talent though, more with her relationship and subsequent marriage to ex-EastEnders star Jack Ryder.

Like Geri and Robbie before her, who left The Spice Girls and Take That prematurely, Kym is enjoying the beginning of a simmering solo career. With debut solo single Cry charting at No2 in April she now releases her latest hit Come On Over.

The hearsay on Kym

  • The youngest of four kids, Kimberly Gail Marsh was born in Whiston, Lancashire and grew up in Garswood, a council estate in Haydock, and Wigan.
  • It was no silver spoon childhood. Her dad's joinery business went through difficult times.
  • Even as a kid, however, Kym knew where she wanted to get to.
  • At eleven she was singing Whitney Houston songs with local kids' stage shows.
  • Precociously, at 13 she made it into the charts with a record - One Kiss- released though small Liverpool label Jelly Street. When she was in her late teens and in an early relationship her two children, David and Emily, were born and for the next six years Kym balanced motherhood and working life while paying her dues as a singer in labour clubs and pubs.
  • At the start of 2001 Kym Marsh was an unknown 24 year old singer from Wigan with a platinum coated dream of greater things.
  • By the beginning of 2002 the striking Lancashire girl had won a TV talent competition, sold millions of records, entered the maelstrom of new British celebrity, sold out a 36 date nationwide arena tour, sung at Wembley Arena and then walked away from it all.
  • Kym had begun dating Eastenders hunk Jack Ryder whom she married last year selling her the wedding photos in an exclusive deal reportedly worth £300,000.
