01/06/09 - Britain's Got Talent judge Piers Morgan told GMTV this morning that Susan Boyle is tired and visited doctors because of the huge pressure she's been under
Speaking to GMTV's Kate Garraway, he said: "I spoke to her yesterday for about half an hour and she's fine. She's gone in for some rest. She needs to get away from everyone – get away from the show, from the media, the public, and just have a bit of down time to herself... She had too long to wait between the audition show and the final, and the pressure just builds and builds and builds... It's been crazy, she has gone from anonymity to being the most downloaded woman in history."
Talking about her admission, Piers said: "It was entirely voluntary and she wanted to do this. She talked to doctors – she's been seeing doctors through the week whenever she's wanting to because they've all been under huge pressure, these contestants...But nobody, and I stress this, has had to put up with the kind of attention that Susan has. And no one could have predicted it - so we entered uncharted territory. I was happy when I spoke to her yesterday that she's basically fine. She loved being on the show – this idea that she hated the show – she loved it. It's been the dream for her to try and pursue her singing career."
Earlier on GMTV Prime Minister Gordon Brown revealed he watched the Britain's Got Talent final on Saturday night, and wished Susan Boyle well:
"I hope Susan Boyle is OK because she is a really, really nice person and I think she will do well. I spoke to Simon Cowell last night and to Piers Morgan and wanted to be sure that she was OK. But also to praise Diversity, just an amazing success for Britain and that will go right round the world."
Gordon Brown went on to praise Diversity's win as a sign that the British electorate did not want to back the 'outrageous' policies of the British National Party. He said: "You have got Diversity coming in – a great example of diversity in our country – who have won, and people have said the greatest act in Britain's Got Talent, and at the same time you have got a party that is practising racism. I really don't think that is what the British public wants to see and I have got a duty to point out to people what that party stands for."
Speaking on GMTV later, Diversity leader Ashley Banjo praised Susan Boyle for being even more 'gracious' off-screen than on:
"She's such a nice lady, honestly. You know, she's been getting a lot of attention from the press, and behind the stage she really was dancing with us and laughing with us. The woman you see on stage – she's probably even more gracious off stage. And I just wish her all the best."
