Everything you need to know about National Twins Triplets and More Week

National Twins Triplets and More Week is organised by the charity TAMBA (Twins and Multiple Births Association).

TAMBA is the only national UK charity directly supporting the families of twins, triplets and more.

There are approximately 10,000 multiple births in the UK every year and the number of twins born each year continues to rise.

For the last 10 years the charity has chosen a week in July to highlight these various issues to the media and the public, who often don't see beyond the 'cute' image of two babies to appreciate the pressures that parents can face.

Facts and Figures:

  • The numbers for twins is increasing with medical advances, particularly in the area of infertility, with women in their late 30s more likely to have multiples whether you have twins in your family or not

  • In 2003, just over 9,000 women gave birth to twins, 127 to triplets and three to quadruplets

  • The number of twins & triplets born as a result of IVF is still high compared with multiple births from spontaneous pregnancies

  • One in every 67 pregnancies in the UK results in a multiple birth

  • Worldwide there are at least 125 million living multiples

  • The US has one of the highest rates of multiples, while Japan has one of the lowest with multiple births occurring one in 120 births

  • Multiple birth babies are more likely to be premature and the babies below normal birth weight

  • It is estimated that one in seven UK couples have difficulty conceiving approximately 3.5 million people

  • Infertility is the most common reason for women aged 20-45 to see their GP, after pregnancy itself

  • The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority are concerned about the increase in multiple births through fertility treatment, because twins and triplets are more likely to be born prematurely

  • Always remember when you have two babies crying it is stressful - you can only deal with one at a time
