One of the last things on your mind when you're planning your holiday is insurance, but it can be one of the most important

When you are planning your holiday the last thing you want to think about is getting ill, but a little careful planning now can make life a whole lot easier if the worst should happen.

If you are travelling in Europe it is essential you get a European Health Insurance Card. This will give you access to the state-provided medical treatment.

It's completely free and you can apply on line or at your local post office.

And if you are one of the 28 million Brits who already has an EHIC card make sure it doesn't expire before you jet off for the sun.

And, If you already suffer from an illness make sure you plan ahead.

Ask your doctor for a letter outlining your medical condition and check to see if you need special permission to carry your strong painkillers.

Plus talk to your airline, for example when flying, oxygen must be requested at least forty eight hours in advance and whilst some carriers like British Airways and Virgin won't charge you for it other airlines will. so it's well worth shopping around.
