As the recession bites, budgeting Brits will be playing pass the parcel with old unwanted gifts this Christmas.

A quarter of people are planning to re-wrap old or unwanted presents and regift to friends and family this Christmas, according to research unveiled today.

Women are worse!

Women are most likely to pass on redundant gifts with 29 per cent admitting to this festive frugality compared to just 17 per cent of men.

Regifting regions

The biggest regifters appear to reside in the Black Country with 41 per cent of people in Wolverhampton admitting that they plan to 'pass the parcel' this Christmas.

The least likely to recycle old gifts are those who live in the West Country, with only 14 per cent of people living in Gloucester planning to regift this year.

Bag a bargain

As well as reusing unwanted gifts, a shrewd one in five are cutting costs by making jams, chutneys and other homemade presents for our loved-ones this year.

Buying Christmas presents using discount vouchers is another popular choice with over half of women.

41 per cent of men planning to buy as many presents as possible this way!

Positive regifting

Sian Harrison from moneysupermarket.com's voucher said:

"Regifting might seem a bit cheeky but it can be a great way to give an unwanted present to someone who might appreciate it more than you do". 

But she warns:

"Just don't give it back to the person who bought it for you!"
